Forming a unique heritage grouping of both Christchurch’s oldest CBD stone church, and oldest timber structure, Trinity Church and Shands are being preserved thanks to the close collaboration of Logic Group and Christchurch Heritage Trust.

Having come to the attention of Logic’s Chris Hausmann as part of his post-quake pro bono work for the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, both buildings will be collocated, restored and preserved on the Trinity site for posterity.

The Challenge.

Securing funding to save both buildings. Stabilising Trinity’s masonry walls using heritage friendly technology. Constant vigilance over design and cost to meet stakeholder expectations, and marry uncomfortable bedfellows building code compliance, budget and ICOMOS adherence.

The Process.

Placing the stonemason at centre, supporting his investigative and innovative system proposals. Forming a JV with a suitable construction partner for structural stabilisation. Sourcing design proposals flexible enough to effect a restoration in keeping with the sites’ heritage qualities.

The Solution.

Logic Group has a vested project interest, from its pro bono heritage involvement to its design and value management, client-side role. “Ownership” is key, with lead roles filled by those committed to be involved, own the problems, and step outside comfort zones to get the best results.
